"Return of Mordecai and the Rigbys" is the twenty-third episode in Season 5 (and one-hundred-thirty ninth episode overall) of Regular Show. It first aired on April 21, 2014.
Synopsis[]
Mordecai and Rigby compete in a battle of the bands to win an air conditioner.
Plot[]
It starts with everyone lying in the living room exhausted from the heat. And Muscle Man decides to take off his pants because of the extreme heat. Benson comes in and says The Park is closed and if anyone needs him he will be lying still in the shade. Rigby became slightly happy that they have a day-off but Mordecai counters that it’s too bad they don't have air conditioner.
Mordecai and Rigby go off to the coffee shop to get some ice water. Eileen asks them what they need, Rigby says they only need some ice water, he starts putting the glass on his face. Eileen starts to talk, she says that there's gonna be battle of the bands and the first prize gets an air conditioner. They both go off to look at the leaflet.
They find the rest of them in the shade and tell them that they are getting the band together so that they win a free AC, Skips plays the bass, Pops keyboard, Muscle Man and Hi Fives on the trumpet, and Benson on the drums. Since Thomas can't play an instrument he suggests that he be the British Manager. They all meet up in the garage and everyone's playing. Mordecai calls for silence and tells everyone that they have equal roles in the band. He asks if anyone has a tune they can with. Benson says that he worked on a rock opera called Bensonphonia. Muscle Man says that since everyone has an equal part that it sounded dumb. Mordecai says that actually he's been working on a riff and he starts playing it. Skips joins in with his bass, then the keyboard then trumpet and last but not least the drums. All goes well until Benson starts nitpicking with everybody else (Muscle Man not blowing hard enough, Pops playing flat notes, Skips playing off tempo). He makes them start over repeatedly, which frustrates everybody.
Everyone but Benson meets in a bathroom stall and discuss who should be the leader of the rehearsal. They vote for Mordecai and Rigby to be the leader. When they leave, they find that Benson has been eavesdropping on the whole thing and is not happy at all. He chastises them for not taking the art of rock 'n roll seriously and betraying him, before quitting the band. To Mordecai it seems like their problems are over without Benson around to get in the way, but Muscle Man points out that now they have no drummer. They try getting Thomas to fill in for Benson, but to no avail.
Mordecai then tries to tell them he's been working on a new "tune" and he starts playing and singing. However, the lyrics are not good and Rigby tries to tell him that. Mordecai then picks him up and almost starts fighting Rigby, but they’re separated from each other and Mordecai quits along with the rest of the band. Eileen comes to Rigby to comfort him and tell him he is the only one who can get the band together.
Rigby lies and tells everyone that there is going to be free pizza in order to lure them all into one spot. When they are told it was a lie, Mordecai messes with Benson's drum kit. They argue and then everyone begins destroying their instruments. They all stop and forgive each other. However, with their instruments destroyed they are unable to play. They go out there anyway without instruments.
As the band shows up on stage, an audience members criticizes them for having no instruments, Mordecai says "We rock so hard we don't need instruments." They begin doing an acapella of Mordecai's "tune" and at first it starts out terrible but then it turns into an excellent play with them winning, summoning Lord Blizzord from the song, and getting the air conditioner.
When they wake up they find out that they actually collapsed on stage of heat stroke before they even started and actually got last place and put in a hospital. Their outstanding performance was merely a manifestation of Mordecai's subconscious. Rigby exclaims they still got the free air conditioning, which is what they were trying to get all along until they feel a draft and ask for extra blankets.
