Plot

A Regular Epic Final Battle Part 1

The park crew arrives at Lolliland, the birthplace of Pops and Anti-Pops. They meet a group of Lolliland natives: Frivola-Kranus, Quadravi-Kranus and Weird Mushroom Guy. The natives explain Pops and Anti-Pops are really named Mega-Kranus and Malum-Kranus, respectively. The natives show the park crew ancient tapestries of the previous battles between Pops and anti-Pops, which detail prior incarnations of the park crew fighting alongside Pops.

Knowing that all of the prior battles have ended in a stalemate (resulting in the universe resetting), Mordecai comes up with the plan of setting traps for anti-Pops to give Pops an upper hand which he didn't have in previous battles.

After Anti-Pops arrives in an Uber-like taxi, Pops tries to convince him not to fight due to them being brothers. Anti-Pops refuses, and attacks Pops, but is caught in the traps laid by the park crew. The victory is short-lived however, as Anti-Pops easily escapes the traps.

A Regular Epic Final Battle Part 2

To ensure the survival of his friends, Pops makes a deal with Anti-Pops: whoever lands the first blow in battle gets to decide the fate of the universe. Pops successfully injures Anti-Pops, whom breaks the deal and continues the fight.

Meanwhile, the park crew, HD DVD, Blu-ray, the Baby Ducks, Toothpick Sally, Recap Robot, Chance Sureshot (whose prior "death" is revealed to be that of a clone), the Guardians of Eternal Youth, Gary Death, Carter and Briggs, Party Horse 42699, and the Guardian of Lolliland fight against Anti-Pops's minions and Streaming Modem.

Sureshot successfully kills the minions by shooting their ship to the elbow of the Guardian of the Lolliland. The heroes transform with the baby ducks into the final form of Hyperduck and almost obliterated Streaming. HD DVD and Blu-ray unlock their destructive weapon named 5.1 surround shockwave and it sends Streaming to the ground, killing him. Pops punches Anti-Pops away, as he sees his no-good brother disappear.

However, Anti-Pops unlocks his titan form and begins erasing Lolliland. Muscle Man and Hi Five Ghost try to escape, but get hit with an erasing beam. Muscle Man says his final "my mom" joke and high-fives Hi Five Ghost, before they both get killed by the beam. Witnessing the death of his friends, Pops becomes so angry that he unlocks his titan form. Anti-Pops erases everyone but Mordecai, Rigby and Pops. The brothers are about to collide fists before Mordecai remembers that this is what causes the reset of the universe, he attempts to stop it by flying in between them but is unable to eject, therefore causing the universe to reset.

The Power (Part 3)

The episode begins the same way as the first episode of the series, including its title sequence. While fighting with the doll of Beef Burrito, Rigby gets a strange sense of deja vu and remembers all past events from the show. Mordecai remembers that they're being fired for breaking the hole in a wall, but Rigby claimed him that they're not being fired. Mordecai doubts that Rigby can see into the future, so Rigby proves it by bringing him outside and digging up the futuristic Blu-Ray box set from "Cheer Up Pops", although Mordecai is still doubtful. However, Mordecai believes that if they can sell the boxset, they'll have enough money to fix the hole in the wall. As Mordecai touches the box set, he regains all his memories.

Looking around, Mordecai realizes that his co-workers are not present in the universe, and soon Mordecai and Rigby discover their interference with the reset caused a glitch in time. Hopeful that they still have the chance to help Pops to save the universe, they use The Power to escape back to their proper place and they've reached the end of the universe once again.

In the battle, Pops is furious with Anti-Pops for killing his friends, but to his happiness and Anti-Pops' anger, Mordecai and Rigby suddenly appear. After the fight, Pops was knocked back to the "The Naive Man from Lolliland" student film. He escapes and dodges giant letters that form "Regular Show", and tries to save Rigby but is knocked back by a giant swarm of Adhesive Notes. Mordecai's surroundings are turned into a storyboard, and Rigby turns into more adhesive notes. As they wonder what is going on, Anti-Pops describes this as describes as "the fabric of reality unraveling". To save Mordecai and Rigby from another blow from Anti-Pops, Pops launches himself into his brother, hugging him, which shrinks Anti-Pops from his titan form to his regular form, as Mordecai and Rigby watch in awe. Pops realizes the only way he can save the universe from being erased is by sacrificing himself along with his brother by flying into the Sun. Distraught with himself, Anti-Pops finds remorse for his actions and they both die, finally two brothers made peace with each other, undoing every damaged and reviving everyone Anti-Pops had erased.

After having spent 3 years in space, the park crew lands the dome back on Earth. They then reunite with their friends and families, including Muscle Man meeting his three year old daughter. Rigby and Eileen share their first proper on-screen kiss. While giving an interview from someone, Mordecai notices Mr. Maellard crying in the crowd, obviously grieving over the loss of his son. A memorial service for Pops is seen with a monumental statue commemorating his sacrifice.

Sometime later, we see Mordecai and Rigby part ways as they quit their jobs at the Park. Over the next 25 years, Mordecai goes on to work as an abstract artist, and Rigby settles down with Eileen and has two children with her. Benson continues to manage the Park, and has got back together with Pam, who's his wife now. Skips too continues to work at the Park. Muscle Man and Starla go on to have five more children. Hi Five Ghost and Celia go on to become successful DJs in Prague, and they have a child together. Mordecai becomes a successful artist and is in museum, giving an autographs. While doing this, Mordecai ends up finding the love of his life in Stef, a bat woman who also works as an artist as they meet up each other after bumping. They have three children together. Mr. Maellard unfortunately passes away at some point during this time too.

25 years after leaving the Park, the gang gets back together for a reunion, and they take a group photo by Pops' statue, and a newly erected Mr. Maellard statue. Mordecai and Rigby reminisce about their time at the Park, before deciding to go and find the old arcade games from "Just Set Up the Chairs". They give their catchphrases for the very first time, after 25 years. Mordecai and Rigby stand up and walk off. The screen goes static and is shown to be played on an old Hanatronic TV in some sort of afterlife. The cassette that says "Regular Show" ejects from the tape as we hear Pops' voice exclaiming "Jolly Good Show!", and Pops is very happy that his friends are moving on with their lives. With this, the episode and the series officially concludes.

Trivia

  • After Anti-Pops survives the traps, Mordecai came to think of all the past villains that were killed off, even showing a pang of remorse for it, but Rigby shrugs it off, believing that they are all fine, likely because of how most of them had ended up in the afterlife as seen in "Exit 9B".
  • This episode reveals that the first seven seasons of the series take place over the span of around six years.
  • By the time the Park Dome returns, it had been in space for three Earth years.
  • After Rigby remembers, it was revealed that he and Mordecai are not being fired.
  • Pops and Anti-Pops' real names are revealed to be Mega Kranus and Malum Kranus, respectively.
  • Chance Sureshot, Toothpick Sally, and Recap Robot survived their previous encounter with Anti-Pops in "Space Escape."
    • Chance reveals that he cloned himself in order to survive.
  • The third part's title doesn't refer "The Power" from the keyboard (although it briefly appears in the episode). Instead, the power is referred that Pops has the power to defeat Anti-Pops and sacrifices himself to save the universe.
  • JG Quintel's other series, "Close Enough" was hinted in this episode when Chance Sureshot mentioned one of his clones was "Close Enough Shot".
  • These are the futures of The Park workers:
    • Pops sacrifices himself to save the Universe and a statue of him is built within The Park in his honor.
    • Mordecai and Rigby leave The Park.
    • Mordecai becomes an abstract artist, marries a bat artist named Stef and has three kids.
      • During the montage three of his paintings shown resemble CJ, Margaret, and Rigby.
    • Rigby and Eileen get married and have two daughters.
    • Benson and Pam get back together, get married, and have four pet cats and Apple Sauce.
    • Skips still works at The Park, but now wears jean shorts.
    • Muscle Man and Starla have a daughter (revealing that Starla was pregnant when the Park Dome left Earth) and many other kids.
    • Hi-Five Ghost and Celia get married, travel the world as famous DJs, and have a son.
    • Mr. Maellard dies, a statue of him is built next to Pops' in his honor and Benson becomes the new owner of The Park.
  • The new workers at The Park are: a tree, a hedgehog, a zebra and an overweight human male.
    • These new workers also resemble some of the main characters:
      • The zebra resembles Mordecai.
      • The hedgehog resembles Rigby.
      • The human male resembles Muscle Man.
      • The tree resembles Hi-Five Ghost.
  • This episode premiered on Martin Luther King Jr. Day along with "Cheer Up Pops."
  • The final scene of the episode, and the series itself, takes place after twenty-five years.
    • Coincidentally, this episode aired in 2017, which marked twenty-five years since Cartoon Network's launch.
  • Older Rigby near the end shares a resemblance to Future Rigby from "Regular Show: The Movie."
  • In "Temp Check" Mordecai and Rigby state that they would never hug. However, during the montage they do hug along with Eileen.
  • During the fight Benson says he hates break dancing, this is ironic since he did break dancing before in the short "Break Time" and enjoyed it.

Episode Connections

Pop Culture References

  • The song played during the montage at the end is the 1977 song, "Heroes" by David Bowie, who passed away over a year before this episode was aired.
  • The colors of one of the new park employees (the grey/pink hedgehog) resembles Boots the Monkey from the Nick Jr. TV series Dora The Explorer, as well as resembling Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Pop's Titan form looks similar to a "Super Saiyan" from Dragon Ball Z.
    • Continuing upon this theme, Anti-Pops' Titan form wears armor vaguely resembling that of Vegeta's Full armor model Saiyan Battle Armor.
    • Also in the vein of Dragon Ball references, one of the tapestries shown during the montage shows Pops and Anti-Pops in their titans forms doing the famous simultaneous punch done multiple times throughout the Dragon Ball franchise
  • The Lolliland anthem slightly resembles the Christmas carol "Oh Christmas Tree."
  • In Part 1, Anti-Pops orders his ship to move to warp-10, a loose reference to Star Trek's famous "warp-factor nine."
  • The app Anti-Pops uses to get to Lolliland is a reference to Uber.

Production Notes

  • This is the series finale of Regular Show.
  • The shot of Pops hugging Anti-Pops in his Titan form was guest-animated by James Baxter, who has worked on films for Disney and DreamWorks Animation. To Cartoon Network viewers, James Baxter is best known for his guest animation/voice role of the fluidly animated James Baxter the Horse on Adventure Time from the episodes "James Baxter the Horse" and "Horse and Ball."
  • Mordecai's wife, the female bat, was never given a name. During an AMA on Reddit with Matt Price and Calvin Wong, Matt gave her the name "Stef" because "JG loves Goonies so I'm going to say her name is Stef".[1]
    • Matt also said he didn’t remember any specific reason why Stef was a bat, probably just because bats are cool and Mordecai would want to be with a cool bat girl.[2]
  • Rigby and Eileen's children were never given names.[3] Neither were Mordecai, High Five Ghost, or Muscle Man's children.
  • Although Thomas was supposed to appear in the episode, the writers decided against it, seeing as the Thomas arc had officially ended on a good note. This makes Thomas one of the only characters not appearing in the finale. His last official appearance was during the Season Seven finale, "Rigby's Graduation Day Special," having a brief cameo as he watched the dome launch into space.
  • Matt Price explained why Mordecai didn't end up with Margaret or CJ:
    • "We felt like the Margaret / CJ story was complete, and they were both on their own path already. We also felt like Mordecai had moved on in his life. He finally left the park to pursue art, and we thought it'd be cool if he met someone while doing that. But we love Margaret and C.J., and we're sure that they're happy without Mordecai! He was too wishy-washy with them!!"[4]
      • He also revealed what happened to Margaret and CJ in the future: " I imagine that Margaret has advanced in the new world, and she's currently traveling the world reporting on global events that finally get her out of town. She's definitely still friends with Eileen and keeps up with Mordecai. They still laugh about how weird their brief relationship was. C.J. moved on to play professional dodgeball, but she doesn't talk to any of them anymore."
      • Owen Dennis defended this decision when a fan asked why they had Margaret do nothing in the finale, saying that wasn’t the case and she is living her own life like everyone else, and he dislikes the trope in media, especially a lot of kids media, of someone’s first love being their last, as it’s not realistic, and both Regular Show and Adventure Time instead showed it’s audience a more honest approach that relationships can be complicated, even sometimes ending without closure, and you won’t end with the first few people you date. While he doesn’t know much about Stef, she likes art just like Mordecai, which is considerably deep seated, and they must like each other enough to want to marry and have a few kids, so he’s happy for him. [5]
        • Matt Price also thought it would have been funny if Margaret ended up with Don, as they would both be missing Mordecai and Rigby, but apparently none of the writers like Don that much for it to happen.
  • This is one of the highest-rated episodes on IMDb, with a rating of 9.6.

Goofs

  • In Part 1, during the scene where the Park Dome fires at Anti-Pops, Muscle Man isn't seen with the other park crew.
  • Colonel Rawls is credited, along with his voice actor, despite not making an actual appearance.
